New Theatre Oxford

Opened: 1886
Capacity: 1,785 seats

  • The New Theatre on George Street opened in 1886 but was extensively remodelled in 1933 with a new art deco auditorium.
  • The theatre has always presented a wide ranging programme of opera, ballet, drama, family shows and musicals, but it is equally well- known as a venue for concerts and comedy.
  • Recent high profile events have included The Mousetrap, West Side Story (which became the best-selling weekly musical in the theatre’s history), Ghost The Musical, sold-out gigs by James Arthur, Russell Brand and Jack Whitehall as well as annual visits from Welsh National Opera and English National Ballet.

The New Theatre offers a unique facility within the historic city of Oxford. We can offer the beautiful main auditorium (seating up to 1800) for hire as well as two front of house bar areas that provide a more intimate space for meetings or functions. The venue team have vast experience of working with hirers to meet and exceed expectations, including regularly hosting elements of the city-wide Skoll World Forum conference.
